🎯 Ankle Bone Shooting (Shagai) at Naadam
A Unique Nomadic Game
Ankle Bone Shooting, known as Shagai, is one of the most distinctive and traditional games of Mongolia. Played for centuries, it reflects the ingenuity and precision of nomadic culture and is an important part of the Naadam Festival.
What is Shagai?
The game uses small sheep ankle bones, called shagai, which are polished and used as targets. Players skillfully flick larger pieces (also made from bone or wood) to hit these targets from a distance.
How the Game Works
- Teams compete to knock down rows of ankle bones arranged on a board
- Players sit or kneel and flick their shooting piece with precision and control
- The goal is accuracy, technique, and consistency rather than strength
- Matches are played in teams, creating a fun and social atmosphere
