🏹 Mongolian Archery at Naadam
A Tradition of Precision and Skill
Archery is one of the “Three Manly Games” of the Naadam Festival, alongside wrestling and horse racing. It has been an essential part of Mongolian culture for centuries, once used in warfare and hunting, and now celebrated as a respected sport.
Unique Style of Archery
Mongolian archery stands out for its distinctive techniques and equipment:
- Archers use traditional composite bows, crafted from wood, horn, and sinew
- Arrows are specially designed with different tips depending on their purpose
- Both men and women participate, making it one of the most inclusive Naadam sports
How the Competition Works
Instead of aiming at a typical target, archers shoot at small cylindrical targets called “surs”, arranged in rows on the ground.
- Men’s competition: Targets are placed about 75 meters away
- Women’s competition: Targets are placed about 60 meters away
- A team of judges stands near the targets and loudly chants “Uухай!” (Uukhai!) to celebrate every successful hit
Tradition & Ceremony
Archery competitions are not just about accuracy—they are rich in tradition:
- Participants wear colorful traditional clothing (deel)
- Matches include ceremonial gestures and respectful rituals
- The chanting of judges adds a unique and lively atmosphere
